Volunteer and Travel Tour in Thailand

Teaching in Temple Schools
Trip code: THA2

For many centuries, wats or Buddhist temples have served as educational institutions for young citizens of Thailand. All the temples receive donation which is used for the maintenance of temples and its surroundings. In addition to this, some temples support social welfare activities for the benefit of the local communities. One of these includes running a school within the temple complex. In collaboration with local Thailand partners, Rustic Travel Volunteers provide volunteers/travelers who have a passion for teaching but also is very interested in Thai society behind the walls of temple school. The volunteers working in temple schools get an opportunity to gain the experience in teaching and also understand Thai culture/Buddhist religion deeply rooted in Thai society.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

Volunteers mostly work as English teachers in primary and secondary school run by Buddhist temples. You will teach English to the local students (not monks) of primary and lower secondary schools for five days a week, Monday to Friday. You will teach practical conversational English by telling stories, playing games, performing plays. Volunteers will also teach specific vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. A supervisor at each school will be assigned to help develop teaching lessons. Apart from this, you will also encourage the students to take part in extra curricular activities and organize sportive games.

Skills and Qualification

Though no teaching experience or skill is needed, volunteers joining Buddhist temple teaching program should have a mastery of the English language as well as speak properly. Volunteers are expected to be flexible and patient. You should have passion and love for teaching, English and conversation.

Project Locations:

Teaching in temple schools projects are available in Bangkok (capital city; notable attractions such as the Grand Palace, Democracy Monument, Giant Swing, Sanam ), with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Known for Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, the culture of Thailand incorporates a great deal of influence from India, China, and the rest of southeast Asia. Like most Asian cultures, respect towards ancestors is an essential part of Thai spiritual practice. Thais have a strong sense of hospitality and generosity, but also a strong sense of social hierarchy.

Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after he project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: waterfalls, lakes, caves, buffalo/ elephant ride, trekking, adventurous rafting, visits to local handicraft outlets, temples (wats), palaces, hotels, and many more.
