Volunteer and Travel Tour in Sri Lanka

Turtle Conservation
Trip code: LKA4

This project was virtually wiped out by the South Asian Tsunami and has been struggling to get back on its feet. It is a temporary home to 700 eggs at any one time; 80 hatchlings in tank, a hawksbill; and an olive ridley turtle. And a permanent home to various other Tsunami damaged turtles. The project provides external veterinary support and some measure of protection for a highly endangered species. Rustic Volunteer Travel seeks volunteers to help make the public more aware of how endangered these beautiful creatures are and just how important it is to help protect them before it is too late. This hands-on approach gives volunteers a real feel for the turtle’s plight.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

As a volunteer, participants will feed and clean the turtles as well as their environments, simultaneously monitoring and releasing baby turtles from the hatchery. Volunteers will also monitor turtle egg-laying, soon followed by relocating the just-hatched eggs to a safe nesting area. Participants will also assist in creating and maintaining a database of turtle statistics. Volunteers duties also include rebuilding the damage which resulted from the Tsunami which includes:

.  rebuilding turtle tanks
.  repairing the visitors' houses
.  developing informational resources and tourist souvenirs
.  conducting tours around the project .

Skills and Qualification

Volunteers do not require any specific qualifications to volunteer in the turtle conservation project. But volunteers should have a deep love for nature and conservation.

Meals/Accommodations:

Rustic Volunteer Travel manages room/food for volunteers. Volunteers live with the host family and we manage a separate, simple, clean and modest room as well as local meals three times a day. Volunteer will also have an access to our office in Sri Lanka and mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 2-4 week interval as a part of the program. Details covering living accommodations provided prior to arrival.

Project Locations:

Turtle Conservation projects are available in Kosgoda (Five of the seven species of sea turtle nest here, rebuilding after Tsunami), with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia, and has been a center of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times. Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, rubber and coconuts, Sri Lanka boasts natural beauty, tropical forests, beaches and landscapes, as well as its rich cultural heritage, making it a world famous tourist destination. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: Buddhist festivals, parks, wildlife sanctuaries, bazaars, markets, beaches, lagoons, restaurants, temples, museums, palaces, hotels, and many more.
