Teaching Buddhist Monks in Nepal
Trip code: NPL4

Nepal is home to all forms of Buddhism practiced in the world. It’s the land where the founder of the religion, Buddha, was born. You can find magnificent monasteries built by Tibetan refugees and other ethnic groups in Nepal. Many monks, both Nepalese and Tibetans, live in the monastery and learn the Buddhist scriptures in Tibetan language. They seldom get any opportunity to learn English. However, as interactions with lay disciple, especially of those from the West have increased, the Rinpoches (higher monks) have realized that without learning English, the monks will not be able to interact and spread the teachings of the Buddha.

Volunteer now in the project and help the monks learn English. You’ll find the monks very well behaved and extremely eager to learn from a foreign volunteer.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

As a volunteer in Rustic Volunteer and Travel's Nepal teaching project in a Monastery, you will primarily work as English instructors to the monks inside a monastery. You’ll teach English to monks for 2-4 hours a day. You are encouraged to hold discussions and debates as this will greatly increase the ability grasp and speak English.

In addition to teaching, you’ll also be allowed to sit, observed and learn about the rituals, prayer ceremonies and meditations inside the monastery and learn about Buddhism from the monks.

Skills and Qualification

Though no teaching experience or skill is needed, volunteers joining the Buddhist monk teaching in Nepal should have good English, both written and verbal. You should also respect the monks at all times and also respect the prevailing culture inside the monastery.

Meals/Accommodations:

Rustic Volunteer and Travel will manage your accommodation and meal during the project. You’ll live with a host family or in a project hostel or in a Home Base, or in a combination of any of the three places. At host family, you’ll be provided with a separate clean and modest room. You’ll enjoy three meals prepared by the host family. Living with a host family is a wonderful opportunity for you learn about the culture and lifestyle of local people.

You’ll also have 24/7 access to our office in Nepal and mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit you in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program. Details covering living accommodations provided prior to arrival.

Project Locations:

Teaching to Monks projects are available in Kathmandu (capital city of Nepal with places of great tourist attractions like Thamel, Patan, Swaymbhu, etc.) and Chitwan (Royal Bengal Tiger and the Great One Horned Rhino Mt Everest) , with shops, banks & internet cafes nearby. Nepal is renowned for its spectacular landscape and deep, exotic culture. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history of houses made up of a tight bamboo framework with mud and cow-dung walls to modern urban infrastructure and much of the amenities you would expect from a city.
