Volunteer Travel Kenya

Teaching English
Trip code: KEN2

There is a current lack of teachers in most schools, which are located in the outer city areas and villages due to brain drain. The Kenyan education system recently went through major changes when free education was provided to the primary level. More students have are now going to school and so there is a shortage of teachers in the public schools. To fill this gap, your volunteer contribution in teaching English would be highly appreciated by the Kenyan people. Rustic Volunteers has partnered with local schools to place volunteers in a number of postings from formal to informal English programs in Kenya.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

Job responsibilities for Rustic volunteers/travelers can vary with each school (secondary or primary). The schools provide the curriculum and teaching material. You will work in conjunction with another teacher and you will report to the head teacher. Most of the students where we place volunteers already understand basic English. You will be teaching a group of 20-35 in a class.

Skills and Qualification

There is no specific qualification needed to join the teaching project. However, volunteers are expected to be flexible and patience. You should have passion and love for children.

Meals/Accommodations:

Rustic Volunteer Travel manages room/food for volunteers. Volunteers live with the host family/hostel and we manage a separate/shared, simple, clean and modest room as well as local meals three times a day. Volunteer will also have an access to our office in Kenya and mobile number of our coordinators. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 2-4 week interval as a part of the program. Details covering living accommodations provided prior to arrival

Project Locations:

English teaching projects are available in the towns of Nairobi (featuring Nairobi National Park, Safari park and National Museum of Kenya) and Mombasa (home to Fort Jesus, Mombasa Tusks, and Gedi Ruins). Kenya's multicultural metropolitan cities are renowned for its deep rooted cultural atmosphere where visitors are always welcomed. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern infrastructure and most of the amenities you would expect from a city. Volunteers can organize several combinations of potential excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place that the volunteers can use during weekends. For example: national parks, ice rinks, markets, museums, restaurants, nightclubs, tourist villages, mausoleums, art galleries, golf courses, crocodile farms, nature trails, hotels, Bombolulu workshops and many more.
