Volunteer Travel Honduras

Orphanage Project
Trip code: HND1

In Honduras, many teenagers are involved in gangs and criminal activities, mainly due to the lack of love and attention from their parents. Help keep these children off the streets and out of trouble, giving them the opportunity to grow up to be happy, productive citizens. Rustic Volunteer Travel’s Honduras Orphanage volunteer project offers volunteers/travelers a marvelous opportunity to help street children who have been rescued by child care organizations in providing them with care, love, education, and recreation. Volunteers/travelers can benefit by supplying these orphans with much-needed love and companionship as well as a solid foundation to meet their needs and nurture their interests.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

Volunteers will teach Basic English, supervise/create games, assist in creativity-based activities (painting, art classes, etc.), assist the children with their homework assignments, as well as serve within the capacity of a companion to the children. Volunteer may also be asked to assist in daily routines of the designated center, including cooking, cleaning, routine maintenance, laundry, etc. Volunteers possessing skills and/or a background in child psychology as well as fluent in Spanish will have the obvious advantage - ensuring the highest level of contribution and effective interaction. While these skills are welcomed, they are not required of volunteers wanting to participate in this particular project

Skills and Qualification

No specific qualifications are required to join the orphanage project in Honduras . However, interested individuals should have a passion and eagerness to help less fortunate children. While Spanish is preferred it is not required. Rustic Volunteer Travel offers free Spanish lessons to participants volunteering in Honduras . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive as well as possess a "can-do" attitude.

Details covering living accommodations provided prior to arrival

Project Locations:

Orphanage projects are available in Copan Ruinas (home to the Mayan Empire, Bay Island). World famous for its archaeology, Honduras is full of natural and cultural diversity. Its strong cultural heritage is based on its ethnic diversity -- a mixture of indigenous European and African races. About 90 percent of the Honduran population is mestizo, a mixture of indigenous, African, and Spanish races also referred to as Ladino. It’s full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern urban infrastructure and much of the amenities you would expect from a city. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: snorkeling, Mayan ruins, scuba diving, hiking, reef diving, mountains, art, milk fairs, festivals, caves, ecological parks, hotels, and many more.
