Volunteer Travel Honduras

HIV/AIDS Projects
Trip code: HND4

Recently, Honduras has begun to experience rapid growth in HIV infections, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all cases reported in Central America. Roughly 80 percent of all reported cases are attributable to heterosexual transmission, and studies indicate that between 1 and 4 percent of pregnant women have been infected with the virus. In partnership with various local schools, Rustic Volunteer Travel strives to advance adolescent reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention. Loving, caring volunteers are needed to work as mentors in attempt to reach the maximum number of people possible; especially the younger generation and the children who are even more vulnerable to this deadly disease. Volunteers can gain instant gratification by knowing that they helped to reduce the stigma of being HIV-positive and combated discrimination.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

Volunteer activities will include counseling, including prevention counseling and the design and use of complementary IEC (information, education, and communication) materials; working in diagnosis and treatment of minor opportunistic infections and palliative care; referring patients in some cases to public or private sources of more sophisticated care, including the diagnosis and treatment of TB and sexually transmitted infections and anti-retroviral therapy, including prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

Skills and Qualification

Volunteers who will work directly in patient care must have a medical or healthcare background. Volunteers working on education, awareness and counseling activities do not require a healthcare background. While Spanish is preferred it is not required. Rustic Volunteer Travel offers free Spanish lessons to participants volunteering in Honduras . All volunteers are encouraged to be flexible, patient and adaptive.

Project Locations:

HIV/AIDS projects are available in Copan Ruinas (home to the Mayan Empire, Bay Island). World famous for its archaeology, Honduras is full of natural and cultural diversity. Its strong cultural heritage is based on its ethnic diversity -- a mixture of indigenous European and African races. About 90 percent of the Honduran population is mestizo, a mixture of indigenous, African, and Spanish races also referred to as Ladino. It’s full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern urban infrastructure and much of the amenities you would expect from a city. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: snorkeling, Mayan ruins, scuba diving, hiking, reef diving, mountains, art, milk fairs, festivals, caves, ecological parks, hotels, and many more.
