Volunteers participating within the capacity of a medical volunteer in Honduras will have various duties depending on education, skills, experience, and qualifications. Volunteers are not permitted to perform major diagnoses or surgical duties. Usually, volunteers will assist doctors - usually within the capacity of an assistant. Volunteers can expect to perform the following duties: measure blood pressure, body temperature, record patients' height, weight, etc. Volunteers may also provide much-needed assistance in various health "camps," distribute medication, provide tips to patients regarding proper health, nutrition, personal hygiene, sanitation as well as providing general counsel to in-need Hondurans. Qualified participants may also assist in treating minor wounds and ailments as well as record-keeping. Additionally, assistance may be needed in supporting various healthcare campaigns addressing numerous illnesses and conditions affecting the citizens of Honduras . Working for the Red Cross is another option open to volunteers.

Volunteers/Interns interested in joining the volunteer health program in Honduras must possess some proof of healthcare certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Rustic Volunteer Travel's partnering hospitals/healthcare clinics require a copy of your resume - clearly stating credentials and education - before your arrival at your assigned project. Rustic Volunteer Travel manages room/food for volunteers. Volunteers live with the host family and we manage a separate/shared, simple, clean and modest room as well as local meals three times a day. Health projects are available in Copan Ruinas (home to the Mayan Empire, Bay Island). World famous for its archaeology, Honduras is full of natural and cultural diversity. Its strong cultural heritage is based on its ethnic diversity -- a mixture of indigenous European and African races. About 90 percent of the Honduran population is mestizo, a mixture of indigenous, African, and Spanish races also referred to as Ladino. It’s full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern urban infrastructure and much of the amenities you would expect from a city. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: snorkeling, Mayan ruins, scuba diving, hiking, reef diving, mountains, art, milk fairs, festivals, caves, ecological parks, hotels, and many more.
