Guatemala Healthcare Project Guatemala Health/Medical Project
Trip code: GTM3

Few health care facilities exist in rural Guatemala, and even fewer people are aware of health problems and basic health care solutions. As a result, poverty hinders Guatemalans in their pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, adversely affecting their social well-being. Rustic Volunteer Travel is able to place interested volunteers/travelers on the front lines, witnessing healthcare from an often intimidating yet beneficial and rewarding point of view. Volunteers/travelers will have the opportunity to provide some level of support social/emotional for these transient children at the most vital level, in hopes of providing a better future for these children.

Project/Volunteer's Life:

Volunteer work will vary depending on the skills and interests of the volunteer. Volunteers may be called upon for tasks ranging from observation to assistance to carrying out procedures as a qualified social/health professional. Volunteer tasks may range from taking blood pressures and temperatures to performing first aid and distributing medicines. If you have the specific skills you can also help and care for a group of mentally and physically disabled persons living in the hospital. They also need volunteers to organize cultural activities with the patients, orphans and elderly who live there.

You should be able to furnish some proof of previous medical field-related experience or expertise will be allowed an increased level of contribution/participation. Project Locations:

Health and Social Worker projects are available in Quetzaltenango (Xela). Touted for its great tasting coffee, Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from its long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern urban infrastructure and offers the tourist all the services and commodities as expected from any other city. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: architecture, volcanoes, beautiful church ruins, zoos, museums, parks, walking tours, hiking, restaurants, hotels, and many more
