Children at Risk/Orphanages Trip code: CRI1
Minimum 4 weeks required to join Costa Rica Orphanage Program
Poverty, abuse, and alcoholism have left many children in Costa Rica without families, depriving them of the parental love and care they need. Orphanages in Costa Rica are a private, Christian-founded home dedicated to providing children with a loving, caring home until situations within the home can be corrected, they can be adopted by families, or are of an age to be on their own. Volunteers/traveler’s support can help keep these children off the street, and helps provide them with a happy and productive childhood. Volunteers/travelers can benefit by supplying these orphans with much-needed love and companionship as well as a solid foundation to meet their needs and nurture their interests, goals and ultimately make their dreams for a brighter future come to fruition.

| Project/Volunteer's Life: |
Some volunteer/traveler responsibilities include tutoring (mostly teaching English) to the children at the orphanage where they are home-schooled and assisting/educating them in areas of personal hygiene (i.e. brushing, flossing their teeth). In the afternoons/evenings, you will organize activities, games, sing-a-longs and dances as well as other creativity-based activities to teach the children. Volunteers will also help with homework and observe academic progress. You will be kept busy during the day when the children are in school by helping clean, cook as well as working in the garden.

| Project Locations: |
Orphanage projects are available in Atenas. Spanish for "rich coast", Costa Rica is famously know for it coffee and for having an incredibly high level of biodiversity throughout its tropical forests. The motto commonly used in Costa Rica is "Pura Vida" (literally "Pure Life"). History proclaims that its birth is essentially the point where the Mesoamerican and South American native cultures met, explaining its rich diverse background. It's full of contrasts: from traditional culture and history to modern urban infrastructure and much of the amenities you would expect from a city. Volunteers can organize different possible excursions during and after the project to visit places of interest. There is a tourist infrastructure already in place the volunteer can use during weekends. For example: waterfalls, eco-tourism, cloud forest reserve, whitewater kayaking/rafting, national parks, volcanoes, beaches, hotels, and many more.
